Project Summary

Rapchat was experiencing a steady decline in content creation and engagement across their app. As a response they wanted to implement innovative features to elevate content creation and consumption to attract and engage young, creative music enthusiasts.

Success Criteria

  • Increase content engagement by 10%.

  • Increase content creation by 10%.

  • Increase artist discoverability by 15%.

Market Analysis

Instead of designing from scratch (due to time constraints), we looked to competitor products to gather answers to certain behavioral or preference questions. We were able to use existing design and learn from it.

Key Findings

  • Video content.

  • Visual & categorized discover page.

  • Ability to add fx to post-video production in studio (filters, stickers, text, etc…).

Brainstorm Solutions

Working sessions with the CEO, head of product and lead engineer yielded answers on how we would prioritize and what we would build while balancing business wants, user needs and technical viability.

Conclusions

  • New content creation tool: Three options to create a track - video, beat, and audio.

  • Improved discover page: easily find or discover new artists.

  • Enhanced social feed: addition of full-screen video.

Interactive Prototypes

Interactive prototypes were crafted and leveraged during usability tests to discover pain points. First-time users that get frustrated makes for an impactful negative user experience which leads to a decrease in user retention.

User Feedback

We asked specific questions and assigned tasks to interviewees regarding the new Rapchat video concept. The goals were to find usability issues and receive user feedback. We performed observational interviews at The Ohio State University, and questionnaires over a community Rapchat Slack channel.

Launch and Learn

After introducing video within our app - Rapchats created and Rapchats played had a noticeable increase. This also allowed Rapchat the flexibility to work with new partners and artists due to the introduction of a new medium. The new studio has given more power to the creators as the variety of content created has increased. We are continuing to smooth out pain points, and increase usability both on content creation and consumption.
